What happened in the 1st ODI, and why it matters for Wellington

India won the 1st ODI in Auckland on 4 November by 5 wickets, by the DLS method, in a rain-hit match.

New Zealand were bowled out for 185 in 40.2 overs, after India won the toss, delayed by rain, and chose to bowl. Tim Seifert top-scored with 38 off 43, Blair Tickner made 34 off 23, Glenn Phillips made 30 off 50, and Daryl Mitchell made 28 off 41. Arshdeep Singh took 4 for 70, Gurnoor Brar took 3 for 44, and Anshul Kamboj took 2 for 22 in 10 overs, with an economy of 2.20, and was named Player of the Match. Axar Patel conceded only 12 runs in 5 overs.

India's chase was interrupted by rain twice. The target was first revised to 167 in 40 overs, then to 143 in 32 overs. India reached 143 for 5 in 22.4 overs, with 56 balls to spare.

Virat Kohli made 74 off 51 balls, with 13 fours and 1 six, at a strike rate of 145.10, before being caught by Seifert off Jacob Duffy. Shubman Gill made 37, and Kohli and Gill added 113 for the second wicket, after Rohit Sharma was out for a duck, 0 off 6 balls, in the first over, caught by Mitchell Santner at mid-off off Kyle Jamieson. Duffy took 3 for 49, Nathan Smith took 1 for 21, and Naman Dhir, 5 not out, and KL Rahul, 3 not out, finished the chase, with Dhir hitting the winning boundary off Smith.

India lead the series 1-0. If India win in Wellington, they will lead 2-0, with three matches left. If New Zealand win in Wellington, the series will be 1-1, with three matches left.

What to watch before the toss in Wellington

Devon Conway's concussion clearance. Conway was ruled out of the 1st ODI with concussion, after colliding with Matt Henry in fielding drills at Eden Park on 3 November. He was taken to hospital, and scans confirmed concussion. His availability for Wellington on 7 November is subject to medical assessment. If Conway is fit, he will open with Seifert or Young. If he is not fit, Seifert will open again, as he did in Auckland, where he made 38.

The weather in Wellington. Forecasts checked on 4 November conflict in detail, but agree rain is likely in Wellington on 7 November, with rain likely in the morning, possibly easing then returning in the afternoon and evening, rainfall 2 to 11 mm, a 40% chance of at least 10 mm, northerlies 10 to 20 km/h with gusts to 50 km/h, low 16°C, high 18 to 21°C, and another forecast giving a 79% chance of rain, high 19°C, low 15°C. Present the forecast as a range, and recheck on 6 November, the day before the match. If rain stops play in Wellington, the match could be shortened by DLS, or it could be a no-result, if India do not bat for at least 20 overs.

India's XI. India won in Auckland with four seamers, Arshdeep, Kamboj, Nabi and Brar, plus Axar as the only spinner, and with Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj and Nitish Kumar Reddy on the bench. Will Gill pick the same XI in Wellington, or will he pick Kuldeep as a second spinner, on a pitch that is slower than Eden Park? Will Siraj return, after being benched in Auckland despite being in both probable XIs? Watch the toss at 7:00 AM IST for the confirmed XI.

New Zealand's XI. New Zealand were bowled out for 185 in Auckland, with no batter making 50. Will Santner pick Matt Henry, after benching him in Auckland despite clearing concussion tests, or Michael Bracewell, after benching him as well? Will Conway return, and if he does, who bats at No. 3, Nicholls or Young?

The pitch at Sky Stadium. Sky Stadium is a drop-in pitch, with a green top early, and wind as the defining variable. The ODI first-innings average at Sky Stadium is 237.7 across 29 full-length first innings, 265.7 across 11 since 2015, carried by World Cup first innings of 393, 341 and 309 in 2015. The three ODIs since 2018 opened with 234, 252 and 222. Par at Wellington is 235 to 265, lower than at Eden Park, where par is 285 to 300. A total of 260 at Wellington is often par, or above par.
